The Social Self: Econo-ME!

THE MATERIAL / ECONOMIC SELF

Individuals are more likely to purchase products that relate to their personalities. The presence of possessions can also affect an individual's self-identity and economic choices. The decisions that people make regarding the purchase of goods and services are often influenced by their family and friends.

A need is anything that is required in order to survive. A want is something that a person seeks yet might live without. The fact that it is required to support life is a major differentiating quality of a necessity.

STORY TIME

I grew up in a not-so rich family, my father is a janitor and my mother is a housewife, I have three siblings and I am the youngest. Growing up, I never really get something that I like, materially, every time that I’m telling my mother that I want to have a new set of toys, she always tells me that there is something that is more important than that. Instead of buying me a new toy, she made me one and from that point, as a kid, I was really happy and contented. Now that I am old enough to decide for myself and partially earning some money because of my writing commissions, my mother’s words really impacted me. Whenever I want to buy something, I always ask myself, “Do I really need this?” “Will I die if I don’t buy it?” From that point. I fully realize that in this world we must know our priority, we must assess if we need it or we just want so show off.

Always remember that, material things can really make us happy, but how long?
