The Emergent Self: Make Your Future Self Happy and Past Self Proud

FUTURE SELF
Understanding oneself is more than merely knowing and identifying oneself as a result of many life events.

A time-oriented lens that focuses on how the self changes from being the self of the past, present, and probable self in the future might help us better understand the self and its potentials and constraints.

The future self is not a possibility that is beyond one's control. Having a clear picture of the future, planning for it, analyzing current possibilities, and making the correct decisions may lead to a bright future. As a result, while living in the present, one has the capacity and agency to form his or her own future.

OVERALL LEARNING

Eleanor Roosevelt once stated that “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” It is true that no one holds the future, change is inevitable, but it is our duty as humans to have a strong grasp on our dream. To share, I am a type of person who likes to set a goal for myself. For example, for the next 7 years I wished to find myself studying for my master’s degree, for the 10 years, I want to have my own house and it follows.

I know that nothing goes out as planned but I still believe that with proper hardwork and stronghold of my passion I’ll still make it there no matter how long it will take. I admit that I’m afraid what future holds, I am scared that what if my plans won’t work after all, or I got tired along the process? But then again, after those circling questions, I found myself having this glimpse of hope that I’ll still make it there.

"The future is not something we enter. The future is something we create."—Leonard I. Sweet
